FAQS
Grooming Guidance You Can Count On
Pricing & Value
How much does dog grooming cost in Mississauga?
Pricing depends on your dog’s size, coat, and the service selected. At Pooches N’ Pals, a full groom ranges from $92–$275+, a bath & tidy from $75–$175+, and a bath with no fur removed ranges from $65–$175+. Add-on services like nail trims, teeth brushing, and de-shedding are priced separately.
What is the going rate for a professional dog groomer?
Rates vary by region and service type, but professional grooming in the Mississauga area typically runs from around $65 for a basic bath up to $275+ for a full groom on a large or heavily-coated breed. Certified groomers, gentle handling, and personalized care are usually reflected in the price.
Is it worth paying more for a certified, independent groomer?
Yes – certified groomers bring formal training, insurance, and experience handling anxious, senior, or specialty-coat dogs. At an independent salon like ours, your dog also sees a familiar groomer each visit rather than a rotating staff, which tends to mean a calmer, more consistent experience.
Tipping
How much should you tip a dog groomer?
The industry standard is around 15–20% of the service cost, similar to other personal care services. It’s always optional and appreciated, not required.
Do you tip a groomer who owns the business?
This comes down to personal preference – tipping an owner-groomer isn’t required, but many clients still choose to tip as a way of showing appreciation for great care.
Choosing a Groomer & What to Look For
What are red flags to watch for when choosing a dog groomer?
Warning signs include a salon that won’t let you tour the space, no visible certifications or insurance, vague pricing, high staff turnover, or reluctance to discuss handling techniques for anxious dogs. A trustworthy groomer is transparent about pricing, process, and your dog’s needs.
How can I tell if a dog groomer is good?
Look for certification, insurance, clear before/after communication, patience with nervous dogs, and genuine reviews from local clients. A good groomer will also ask about your dog’s coat, skin, and behavior before the appointment, not just show up and start.
Where's the best place to get my dog groomed in Mississauga?
It depends on what you’re looking for. Pooches N’ Pals has been serving Port Credit and the greater Mississauga area since 2013, with certified, award-winning groomers who focus on gentle, low-stress handling for dogs of all breeds and temperaments.
Grooming Process & Terminology
Why does a full dog groom take several hours?
A Full Groom includes a bath, drying, ear care, nail trim, and a full haircut – each step takes time to do safely and comfortably, especially brushing out coats before bathing and hand-drying to avoid matting. Dogs with thicker or longer coats, or dogs that need extra breaks, can take longer.
What is a teddy bear cut on a dog?
A teddy bear cut leaves the face and body rounded and fluffy rather than trimmed close, giving a soft, stuffed-animal look. It’s a popular style for Poodles, Doodles, Bichons, and Shih Tzus.
What does FFF mean in dog grooming?
FFF is common grooming shorthand, most widely used to mean “Face, Feet, and Fanny” – a quick tidy-up of those three areas without a full body cut. It’s often used as a between-groom maintenance service.
Puppy Grooming
What age should a puppy start going to the groomer?
Most groomers recommend starting puppy visits around 10–12 weeks, once vaccinations allow, so they can get comfortable with handling, noise, and the grooming environment early.
How much does puppy grooming cost?
Our Puppy’s First Visit package starts at $85+, depending on the size of the dog, and includes a bath, nail trim, ear cleaning, blow-dry, and light trimming designed to ease your puppy into the grooming process.
When should a puppy get their first haircut?
It depends on the breed and coat type, but most puppies are ready for a light trim by 3–4 months old. We recommend bringing puppies in every 4–6 weeks in the meantime for baths, nail trims, and ear cleaning to build familiarity before a full haircut.
Senior Dog Grooming
Can senior dogs still be groomed safely?
Yes. Senior dogs need extra care, patience, and sometimes a second groomer to help with positioning or mobility limitations. We tailor the pace and handling to each senior dog’s comfort level.
What is a comfort groom for senior or anxious dogs?
It is best to book your grooming appointment in advance, especially if you have a preferred groomer or date. Availability can vary, so booking ahead gives you a better chance of getting the appointment time you want. You can check the online booking schedule or contact the salon directly for current availability.
Nail Trims
How much does it cost to get a dog's nails trimmed?
A standalone nail trim costs $29. Nail Trim & Grinding costs $38 and includes both cutting and filing. Nail trim services are also available as walk-ins, even when no appointment slot is showing online.
What can I do if my dog won't let anyone trim their nails?
This is common, and experienced groomers are used to working through it with patience, positioning techniques, and short sessions rather than forcing the process. Let us know in advance if your dog is nail-sensitive so we can plan extra time.
Do dogs actually feel better after a nail trim?
Yes – overgrown nails can affect a dog’s gait and cause discomfort or joint strain over time. Regular trims keep them walking and playing comfortably.

Additional High-Conversion FAQs
What's the difference between a Full Groom, Bath & Tidy, and Bath?
A Full Groom includes a complete haircut and starts at $98. A Bath & Tidy includes bathing, brushing, and light trimming. A Bath focuses on washing, drying, and brushing without removing fur. Prices vary based on your dog’s size and coat.
Do you take walk-ins, or is grooming appointment-only?
Full grooms and baths are by appointment, though same-day appointments are sometimes available. Quick services like nail trims are available on a walk-in basis, even without an online booking slot.
How far in advance should I book?
It is best to book your grooming appointment in advance, especially if you have a preferred groomer or need a specific date. Availability can vary, so booking ahead gives you a better chance of getting the appointment time you want. For the most accurate availability, check the online booking schedule or contact the salon directly.
Do you groom matted dogs, and is there an extra charge?
Yes, though a matting fee of $20+ may apply depending on severity, since de-matting takes extra time and care to do safely and comfortably for your dog.
Can I request creative grooming for my dog?
Yes – creative grooming is available but requires a consult first, since the design, time, and technique vary for every dog. Not all of our groomers offer creative grooming, so spots are limited.
